Larry LaRocco on Homeland Security

Democratic Senate Challenger; previously US Rep.

Reducing foreign oil dependence improves national security

Our dependence on oil influences our international credibility and restricts our foreign policy toward [supplier] nations. Iran continues to develop a nuclear program knowing that the world response will be influenced by the need for oil. China has been hesitant to allow the UN to sanction Iran partly because of China's oil investments in Iran. If we were no longer dependent on Iran's oil, the US would gain significant power in negotiations and could more effectively stop Iran's nuclear proliferation.

Address the needs of our troops and their families

We need to make certain that the needs of our troops and their families are addressed at home as we rebuild our military's infrastructure. The next step is up to Congress, and the clock is ticking.
