Keisha Lance Bottoms on Crime

Non-violent mentally ill should be treated appropriately

Q: What would you do to help reduce safety issues that are related to mental illness?

BOTTOMS: Mental illness is an epidemic throughout this country. We have to make sure that people are aware of the services that are available to treat those who are experiencing mental health challenges such as our 988 system that's not widely publicized in this state. We also have to make sure that when people have encounters with the criminal justice system that they are routed appropriately. Committing a nonviolent crime, we want to make sure that they are routed to the appropriate services so that they can have their issues addressed and it's not a revolving door.

JACKSON: Mental health is a huge problem in our jails. There is absolutely nothing, nothing, that's a higher priority and important more than a governor keeping you safe. You cannot decide to take up for criminals over victims and police and keep people safe. It is disqualifying you as being governor.
