Socialist Party Platform

Fund public transportation, high-speed rail

The Socialist Party calls for extensive public transportation in both urban and rural areas.

We call for the creation of a fully funded high-speed national rail system with fares set low enough to be a viable alternative to the use of the automobile. We call for an end to the expansion of the interstate highway system and the reduction of combustion engine/auto based transport.

Breakup large media companies; have government own airwaves

An ever-smaller band of huge corporations controls virtually all news and entertainment media. The Socialist Party stands for the right of ordinary people to express opinions and communicate freely by vastly extending the public sector of all forms of mass media.

Massive federal investment in infrastructure

We support a program of massive federal investment in both urban and rural areas for infrastructure and economic development. It is important to direct technology toward scientific exploration, research and development.

Transfer interstate highway funding to high-speed rail

We call for a fully funded high-speed national rail system, an end to the expansion of the interstate highway system and reduction of combustion engine transport. We call for public ownership and worker control of the airline industry and the petroleum and gas industries until their use is no longer viable.

Restore & reconstruct 155,000 U.S. bridges

The highway and bridge infrastructure in the United States is in serious need of repair. More than 155,000 U.S. bridges need to be restored or reconstructed. The creation of hundreds of thousands of permanent, full-time union jobs could restore the infrastructure. Mass transit and high-speed national train systems also are needed to greatly reduce dependence on cars and to reduce global warming.

Sued cable TV company to pay city for damaging streets

[As mayor of Burlington], after a court battle, the utilities were forced to pay for the damage done when they tore up our streets for utility work. Following a heated battle with a cable TV company, and an effort on our part to create a municipally owned system, we managed to get substantial revenue from them and reduced rates for seniors.
