Gun violence is a public health crisis
More people in Washington are dying from firearm fatalities than even from traffic accidents. We have a public health crisis in need of a public health solution. We can and must find effective ways to reduce the rates of accidental shootings,
gun crime and gun-related suicide. My executive order would strengthen the background check system approved by voters in 2014 to collect information that will drive solutions to gun violence.

Pass common-sense gun laws
Let's leave a legacy of common-sense measures that help end the scourge of gun violence. Our state's voters have demonstrated strong support for such measures.
We can continue our commitment to public safety and health by banning bump stocks, closing the loophole on semi-automatic rifles, and requiring the safe storage of firearms.

Arming teachers with guns is ridiculous
To Inslee, a key part of the formula for running against Trump is being ready to take him on directly. During the National Governors Association meeting, Inslee was at the White House with the other governors for a lunch. Every year, a few governors get
up and ask questions, and so the night before the event, Inslee and a few staffers brainstormed how to make the best use of the chance.The governor didn't like any of their suggestions, and ended up improvising a question inspired by his
brother-in-law, a teacher, about the proposal Trump was pushing after the Parkland shooting to arm teachers with guns. Inslee called it ridiculous. He told the president to stop tweeting and start listening. He watched the president's arms cross into
his telltale grumpy self-hug, his hands shoved back behind his armpits, elbows up, lips pursed. ("If he's ever carved on a mountain, it won't be Mount Rushmore, it'll be Mount Petulant," Inslee told me later. "And that's the pose.")

Acted for common-sense gun-safety where Congress won't
While too many in D.C. remain in the grips of the NRA, we're the state that stands up for common-sense gun-safety reforms.
We've closed background check loopholes, banned bump stocks and approved protective orders that keep guns away from people in crisis.

Lost seat over assault weapons bill; confront NRA again
I've known that it is time to confront the NRA and develop commonsense gun legislation for a quarter of a century. In 1994, when I was a freshman legislator, I was representing eastern Washington.
We needed just a few votes to pass the assault weapon bill. And I knew if I cast that vote, I was probably going to lose my seat in Congress. I voted for that bill.
I provided one of the critical votes to get it over the top. I lost my seat. But I have never regretted that vote because I do not believe any congressman's or politician's seat is more important than any child's life.
We are not going to back up against the NRA. We have them on the run. This country's moving forward to commonsense gun legislation. I'm glad to be part of that.

Require safety training; ban assault weapons
One of the most meaningful measures we can take is requiring that people have safety training before they purchase a gun. We expect that people have completed safety training in multiple parts of our lives.
We should expect that before someone buys a gun they have some basic safety training. It has worked in other states. It's time to put it to work in Washington.
The time has come for this Legislature to ban the sale of military-style assault weapons. These weapons are designed for the sole purpose of destroying lives--the lives of school children, law enforcement officers, concert-goers, nightclub patrons,
and people gathered in houses of worship. We owe our children the assurance we're doing all we can to keep them safe. Let's prove to them that the gun lobby doesn't make the rules in Washington state--we do.

Make America the “Safest Big Country” in the World
After climbing relentlessly for three decades, crime rates started to fall in the 1990s. Nonetheless, the public remains deeply concerned about the prevalence of gun violence, especially among juveniles, and Americans still avoid public spaces like downtown retail areas, parks, and even sports facilities.
We need to keep policing “smart” and community-friendly, prohibiting unjust and counterproductive tactics such as racial profiling; focus on preventing as well as punishing crime; pay attention to what happens to inmates and their families after sentencing; use mandatory testing and treatment to break the cycle of drugs and crime; and enforce and strengthen laws against unsafe or illegal guns. Moreover, we need a renewed commitment to equal justice for all, and we must reject a false choice between justice and safety.
Technology can help in many areas: giving police more information on criminal
suspects so they do not rely on slipshod, random stop-and-search methods; allowing lower-cost supervision of people on probation or parole; and making it possible to disable and/or trace guns used by unauthorized persons.
Above all, we need to remember that public safety is the ultimate goal of crime policy. Until Americans feel safe enough to walk their neighborhood streets, enjoy public spaces, and send their children to school without fear of violence, we have not achieved public safety.
Goals for 2010 - Reduce violent crime rates another 25 percent.
- Cut the rate of repeat offenses in half.
- Develop and require “smart gun” technology to prevent use of firearms by unauthorized persons and implement sensible gun control measures.
- Ban racial profiling by police but encourage criminal targeting through better information on actual suspects.
- Require in-prison and post-prison drug testing and treatment of all drug offenders.
