Rosalind Kurita on Education

Invest in pre-kindergarten programs

I believe education is one of the most important investments government can make. I supported an innovative pre-kindergarten program that will give Tennessee's most vulnerable four-year olds the start they need to succeed in school. Students who complete pre-kindergarten programs are less likely to have trouble reading and far less likely to end up committing crimes. Some research suggests that for every one dollar invested in pre-k, the state will save 17 dollars in long-term expenses.

More HOPE lottery scholarships for college

I have been a supporter of the lottery scholarships that gives more Tennessee children a chance to attend college. The HOPE scholarships have already benefited thousands of Tennessee students and in the years ahead, they will help transform education in our state.

Increase teacher salaries

Teachers are the key to educational success. I have supported increasing teacher salaries - and now, for the first time, Tennessee is above the Southeastern average in teacher pay. We must pay our teachers competitively to keep the best and most capable teachers in Tennessee so our children get the education they deserve.
