Teri Hourihan on Abortion

Abortion only when medically necessary

Q: Is abortion a woman's unrestricted right?

A: I am personally pro-life. I believe that a fetus is a human life and that unborn children have rights that deserve consideration and protection. At the same time, I respect the will of Arizona voters and will not pursue legislation intended to undermine Proposition 139 or attempt to repeal Arizona's voter-approved abortion law. I do not view abortion as an unrestricted right because I believe the rights and interests of the unborn child also matter. However, when an abortion is medically necessary to protect the life or health of the mother, physicians should be able to provide appropriate medical care without fear of prosecution or unnecessary government interference. As Governor, my responsibility would be to respect the law approved by Arizona voters while ensuring that women and their doctors can make medically necessary decisions safely and that differing views on the rights of unborn children are treated seriously and respectfully.
