Hannah Pingree on Tax Reform

Think about how we tax second homes owned by nonresidents

Q: What taxes would you seek to lower, or raise?

BENNETT: Our taxes overall are far too high in this state. The property tax is inequitable. It hits everybody in this state in hard ways.

PINGREE: I think what Mainers are concerned about his property taxes. Lots of folks are feeling like they can't afford their property taxes right now. We need to focus on the property tax and ensuring that people have relief and they can keep their homes. I propose to double the homestead exemption, I think we should open up our constitution -- we will have to work across the aisle to do that -- and think about how we tax second homes owned by nonresidents, wealthy folks here in the summertime.

CHARLES: We will provide a $100,000 property tax exemption to all Mainers. It is reimbursed at 100%. That flows back into the economy again. I'm going to provide additional tax break for veterans, on the income tax, about a billion dollars in the first year, and we keep moving it down.
