Hannah Pingree on Drugs

I believe in treatment or recovery; don't go backwards

Q: On Maine's needle exchange program: What would you do to reduce discarded needles and address the underlying addiction problem?

CHARLES: Giving away 4 million needles is not the answer on addiction services--we need to get residential treatment, so they can get a job and support themselves.

PINGREE: I have heard from people all over Maine who are worried about similar issues. finding needles whether kids go to playgrounds, concerned about chronic homelessness. This is an issue where the state needs to be a better partner with our cities. I do believe very deeply in treatment and recovery. I'm so proud of the work we have done the last four years to reduce every single year the number of overdose deaths. We can't go backwards. We can't go back to the LePage days where we don't believe in treatment or recovery.

BENNETT: The syringes services program only works when it is used as a means of bringing people & to receive services that they need to get them to recover from their addictions.
