Wes Moore on Crime

Focus juvenile justice on accountability and opportunities

Q: On juvenile justice what serves the community best in terms of consequences and rehabilitation?

Cox: Young people want accountability. They also need to have rec centers built. We need to make sure we have rec opportunities for our youth and build and expand activities. The governor signed the youth charge reform act every state's attorney opposed.

Moore: There is nothing that I take more seriously than public safety and making sure people can feel safe in their neighborhoods. We made the largest investments in local law enforcement in our state's history and we are having the fastest drops in violent crime in America. I was one of those kids. I had handcuffs on my wrists by the time I was 11 years old and for kids like me making sure we can create pathways to imagine themselves in spaces bigger than where they are now it has to be about accountability and opportunities for our young people.

I have no tolerance for violent offenders, period

I want the people of my state to understand that I have no tolerance for violent offenders, period and full stop. And there is nothing that we will not do to make sure that our communities are safe. It's the reason we made historic investments in local law enforcement. It's the reason that we have been very clear that, if someone commits a violent crime in our state, I want him in handcuffs in 24 hours and they will have accountability coming their way.

Reform juvenile justice system, give boys a second chance

We have made it an all-of-government and all-of-society effort to be able to do things like get more men inside the classroom, to get more men inside of health care, to make sure that we're doing things like reforming of a juvenile justice system and providing more supports for young boys that are falling into the juvenile justice system and giving them a legitimate shot at having a second chance, that this is not just going to be good for young men. It's going to be good for our large society.

Build on the historic cannabis pardons I signed into law

A cornerstone of our effort this year will be helping to ensure that we confront the myth that every sentence is treated like a life sentence. That is why this session, I have introduced legislation to build on the historic cannabis pardons I signed into law last year--the largest state pardon in our nation's history. Our new bill would expand eligibility for expungement, by allowing individuals who violate their parole or probation to petition to have their records wiped clean.
