Charlie Baker on Families & Children

Reduced caseloads and licensed almost all social workers

With your help, the Department of Children and Families has made tremendous progress serving some of the Commonwealth's most at risk children and families. Caseloads are at historic lows and virtually all of our social workers are licensed.

We doubled the earned income tax credit for 450,000 low income working families, invested over $100 million in new funding into our early education system and reduced the use of hotels & motels to shelter homeless families by over 95%. Think about that!

Top-to-bottom review of Department of Children and Families

Baker called for the resignation of Olga Roche, the head of the state's embattled Department of Children and Families, heavily criticized since the disappearance of a little boy who's now feared dead. "The commissioner should step down, and we should find someone who can go into that job and put fresh eyes on it and do the kind of top-to-bottom review, do the kind of basic work around protecting and keeping kids safe," said Baker.

He called last month for the release of region-by-region data on social worker caseload and abuse reports but stopped short at the time of calling for Roche to resign. Baker also said the Attorney General should stop fighting a 2010 lawsuit appeal filed by Children's Rights, a child advocacy group that accused the state of violating the constitutional rights of thousands of children in the state's foster care system by placing them in unstable and sometimes dangerous situations.
