Annie Andrews on Social Security

Raise the cap so the wealthiest among us pay more

Q: What needs to be done to fix Social Security, which will be insolvent by 2032?

Andrews: I continue to grow increasingly frustrated as I watch politicians election cycle after election cycle talk about the problems of Social Security. This is one of the problems we know the answer to. We need to raise the cap so the wealthiest among us pay more into the system. That allows us to have Social Security solvency but then we have to have hard conversations how to be fiscally responsible. I would never support raising the retirement age.

Graham: Under my Democratic opponent government funded health care for all is only going to drive up the debt, further jeopardize Social Security.

Whitener: If we raise the cap we're only giving more money to people who can't be trusted to spend it. We need to talk about options for young people, give them a chance to opt out of social security.

Collect more from higher earners for Social Security

[On retirement funding]: "Some of the most wealthy among us aren't paying their fair share," explains Andrews. "There are some proposals once you get beyond $400,000 to reinstate the Social Security tax, we can collect more revenue in the program and make good on our promise because if we don't do that it will affect the most vulnerable Seniors in our community and that's not just ok with me."
