Ashley Hinson on Social Security

Raising the cap is insufficient; we need a Commission

Q: In six years, Social Security will only be able to pay 78% of benefits. Your thoughts?

Turek: The very best way to keep Social Security solvent is by taking off the cap. I think that it is fundamentally wrong that [workers pay] payroll tax year round. Meanwhile, [wealthy] folks pay just for the first few minutes of the year. The best way we can keep this solvent is by taking off the cap.

Hinson: I have not voted for cuts to Social Security benefits, and I will not support cuts to Social Security benefits. What frustrates me is the constant fear mongering around Social Security. Raising the cap is not going to take care of the entire gap. That's just the reality of it. The way the program is set up, it's not going to fix all the problems. So what I've advocated for and what I would support, to take the politics out of it: Let's set up a bipartisan commission that does the tough work of making the decisions about what we need to do so that we can have it presented to Congress.
