	Moore Capito on Drugs

Much of the crime we see is connected to drugs in some way

West Virginia's age-adjusted drug overdose death rate in 2021 was 90.9, more than 34 points above the second worst state of Tennessee. Capito said the continued influx of illegal drugs into the state, including fentanyl, is a supply problem that needs to be cracked down on with increased criminal penalties. Capito believes once you crack down on the supply and on the criminal element in communities, it will create less temptation for those recovering from substance use disorder from relapsing.

"The first thing we've got to do is crack down on the suppliers," Capito said. "We've absolutely got to stop these folks from bringing these toxins and poison, this fentanyl and meth, into our communities .... Once we see those folks gone, the supply's not going to be there anymore. Crime is going to drop because so much of the crime that we see in our communities right now is associated with or connected to drugs in some way."
