Bob Ferguson on Tax Reform

Millionaires' Tax on those earning more than $1M a year

Washington families whose income is in the bottom 20% pay a whopping 13.8% of their total income in taxes, while those whose income is in the top 1% pay only 4.1% of their income. That's not fair. That's not right. And that's why I'm calling for something truly historic--a Millionaires' Tax. I want to be clear that when I use the term "millionaire," I mean someone who makes more than a million dollars in income in a single year. That does not include assets like the value of your home.

Surtax on big banks makes state's tax system fairer

The Washington Supreme Court unanimously upheld a new tax on big banks aimed at providing essential services and improving the state's regressive tax system. The 1.2% business and occupation surtax--a tax added on top of other taxes--was passed by the Legislature in 2019. Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson called the ruling "a win for those fighting to make Washington's tax system fairer."
