Amanda Janoo on Homeland Security

Defend the Guard: No deployment unless Congress declares war

Q: Do you support the Defend the Guard Act, which was proposed in a recent legislative session but did not pass? Amanda?

Amanda Janoo: Yes.

Aly Richards: We have to be really strategic together as we are fighting against our attack on democracy, and this is where we pass something like this that puts a big, big target on the back of the National Guard, which is incredibly important. I've talked to a lot of guard families, and –

Q: Is that a yes or no?

Aly Richards: I have to say, Guard families are not asking for this that I've talked to. So at this point, no.

[OTI explainer: Vermont's "Defend the Guard" legislation (H.355) requires the governor to withhold consent for federal combat deployments unless Congress has formally declared war, which would disallow Vermont National Guard from deploying to Iran.]
