Troy Jackson on Health Care

Keep a trillion in health care instead of tax cuts

Q: Trump is sending one-time payments of about $90 to more than 20 million Medicare beneficiaries. Are these payments meaningful relief?

Collins: We've got to work on health care affordability, and a major issue here is the high cost of prescription drugs. There's a lot that we can do to make health care more affordable.

Jackson: We took $1 trillion out of our healthcare industry so that we could give people like Elon Musk the income tax cuts. That's what the Big Beautiful Bill did. Senator Collins had a chance to stop that, not advance it. The thing about it is that we're going to lose $5 billion here in Maine in Medicaid cuts. We've lost SNAP benefits. We've lost 30,000 people that have gotten ACA subsidies taken away another 60,000 people have seen increases. A lot of these problems are actually designed to come into effect after the midterms. I mean that's how bad that they knew this bill was that they made sure that the effects didn't happen until after the election.

Believes in Medicare for All; supports public option

First and foremost, Maine needs a public option. While Troy believes in Medicare for All, he believes that it would be a challenge for Maine to implement on its own. That's why he supports the pursuit of a public option. As we work to get a public option up in running Maine, we must also rein in the price of prescription drugs, protect access to reproductive care and invest in rural health care.
