Lee Jones on Education

Democratic Senate Challenger (KS)

More funding for Kansas's public schools

It's no secret that Kansas's public schools are in a funding crunch. While much of it is due to a State Legislature that has failed thus far to make the tough decisions necessary to alleviate the problem, it is also federal policy that has added to the crisis. The "No Child Left Behind" Act is a prime example of our current administration's attempt, along with a lock-stepping Sam Brownback, to change education policy for the worse but not even adequately fund it. As funds dry up, children are indeed being left behind, especially our most vulnerable kids. Students with physical disabilities, learning difficulties, low income kids, all are victimized by a President and Congress who don't keep their promises. I will work to restore the full 40% federal funding for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. I will also fight any attempt at implementing "No Child Left Behind" unless the federal funding is there to make sure it actually works to the benefit of students and educators.
