Lee Jones on Tax Reform

Democratic Senate Challenger (KS)

Repeal the Bush tax cut on the wealthiest 1%

The Bush administration has marketed tax cuts like a snake oil salesman peddles patent medicine. It is not a cure-all for the economy. Congress needs to have the collective sense to say no to wanton, irresponsible tax cuts for the nation's wealthiest income bracket as well as tax breaks to multinational corporations, especially when they outsource the jobs of our nation's workforce. By the same token, Congress needs to give targeted tax relief to the middle and lower classes.

The Bush tax cuts need not be completely repealed. Tax cuts that unfairly reward the nation's top 1% in income should most definitely be removed, but tax cuts for middle & lower income earners should remain in place. For the vast majority of American the burdens of increased health insurance coverage and other taxes negate the meager amount given back to them in income tax relief. Tax cuts are absolutely not the economic stimulus touted by the Bush administration and my misguided incumbent opponent.

Abolish estate tax for estates under $5 million

I have no objection to abolishment of the estate tax below a certain baseline. Estates of more than five million dollars are large enough that they could be taxed without placing an unnecessary burden on inheritors.
