Abdul El-Sayed on Health Care

Medicare for all is where we need to go

Medicare for all is where we need to go. In the interim, we're going to do everything we can to start lowering prescription drug prices and health insurance premiums and prices, but we need to get to Medicare for all to guarantee every single person the health care that they need and deserve. It's not about taking anything away. It's about adding the guarantee, the security of having health insurance in your life in the way that seniors across this country have been able to benefit from.

Will fight to bring universal health care to whole country

Eight years after he pledged to bring Medicare for All to Michigan as part of his unsuccessful bid for governor, Abdul El-Sayed says he'll fight to bring universal health care to the whole country if elected to the US Senate. Health care costs and access have emerged as key issues in the Democratic primary for Michigan's open US Senate seat, where El-Sayed stands alone in his push to enroll all Americans in what critics call an expensive government-run system Congress is unlikely to ever adopt.

Supports universal healthcare

Our state must ensure that Michiganders have access to healthcare without worries--about premiums, coverage, or the GOP's latest antics. Creating a viable public healthcare program for Michigan is crucial to ensuring that we can care for our families. That is why my administration would fight for public insurance to provide affordable healthcare access to every Michigander.

Public health suffers when you run government as a business

El-Sayed said his background as the former director of the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion will have a large impact on his candidacy, as it gave him a more intimate and open look into public health. He said his unconventional background will help Michigan stray from "politics as usual," which he believes is a mindset that hasn't been working. "It's not just public health that suffers when you run government as a business," he added. "It's also things like public education."
