Travis Childers on Immigration

Signed anti-amnesty pledge: don't reward lawbreakers

Travis Childers, the Democratic Senate nominee, has signed an anti-amnesty pledge, a move that could endear him to disgruntled supporters of former tea party candidate Chris McDaniel.

Childers said he signed the Federation for American Immigration Reform's pledge in part because he worries about Mississippi's high unemployment rate, which he thinks would be exacerbated by allowing undocumented immigrants to work in the US: "I don't think you need to be rewarding people who break the law," said Childers. Mississippi's unemployment rate is 7.9%; only Georgia's was higher.

FAIR says 29 Senate candidates and 82 House candidates have signed the pledge, including Childers and McDaniel but not Cochran. Childers is the only Democrat to sign it.

The pledge [opposes] legislation that would allow undocumented immigrants to work legally in the US, increase the number of legal immigrants, and increase the number of guest workers admitted to the US annually. Childers said he opposes all three.

Secure our borders; enforce our laws

Travis is working hard to secure our borders, make sure that legal immigrants are paying their fair share of taxes, and enforcing the laws that we already have to ensure that those who hire illegal immigrants are punished. The first summer Travis was in office, he met with representatives of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on the U.S.-Mexico border to gain first-hand knowledge about the challenges facing U.S. border securit y. He has worked directly with DHS to permanently station Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in North Mississippi, and has also introduced and passed legislation to prevent the hiring of illegal immigrants on federally-funded transportation p rojects.
