Old Testament on Welfare & Poverty

Old Testament

Those who help the poor honor their Maker

"Those who oppress the poor insult their Maker, but those who help the poor honor Him." -- Proverbs 14:31

Anyone familiar with the Bible knows that our responsibilities to care for others don't end with our families. There are numerous Biblical references to our obligations to care for the poor and to love our neighbors as ourselves. And even if you don't believe in God and/or the Bible, most of us have an innate sense that it is right to care for those less fortunate than ourselves, and even those with the hardest hearts should understand that elevating the social status of the poor is better for the economy as a whole.
