Bob Dole on Abortion

Former Republican Senator (KS)

1996: Sought "tolerance clause" in GOP pro-life platform

Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole, a pro-lifer of more than 3 decades' standing in his congressional voting record, made a bow in the direction of the "big tent" by trying to force a "tolerance clause" into the pro-life section of the 1996 GOP platform. Delegates quickly rejected the idea. But (in a pattern that was to hold firm in the conventions of 2000 and 2004) Republican convention managers allowed no pro-life speeches during the convention's prime-time hours on national television.
