Carol Moseley-Braun on Social Security

Former IL Senator; Democratic Candidate for President

Payroll tax is a regressive "working man's tax"

The payroll tax is regressive and could well be called the working man's tax because it is capped at about $80,000. By shifting health care funding [from the Social Security payroll tax] to the income tax, we can provide universal coverage without costing a penny more than we are already paying, take some of the payroll tax burden off of working people, and at the same time give small businesses an incentive to create jobs and large business a better competitive edge in international markets.

Our children must have same security as us

Q: What is your position on raising the retirement age?

MOSELEY-BRAUN: If we are actually going to accept our generation's responsibility, that's going to mean that we give our children no less retirement security than we inherited from our parents. To me, that means keeping Social Security safe, that means not raising the retirement age, that means not putting on additional restrictions that would give people less upon which to fall back and retire than we inherited.
