Joe Arwood on Homeland Security

Protect commonsense defense investment and veterans spending

To help our veterans, I believe we must keep the Department of Veterans Affairs as a cabinet-level department, to ensure that we protect commonsense defense investment and veterans spending. We must overcome the benefits claim backlog, ensure a seamless transition back home for new veterans, care for wounded warriors, continue the mission of accounting for all U.S. military personnel from all wars, and increase veteran's mobile healthcare clinics and cover all those with Agent Orange exposure

Cut unnecessary Pentagon programs; scale back overseas bases

As a nation, America's security is promoted with a vigorous defense. Projecting strength is not achieved by unsustainable spending. The projection of strength can be achieved as we support the programs and equipment that our military leaders have determined that they need. As your Senator, I will seek to cut defense spending on projects that the leaders at the Department of Defense have identified as unnecessary. In terms of the number of bases located around the world, I will again apply a commonsense approach to identifying bases in areas of the world that may no longer be needed. With the help of the military leadership I will seek to scale back the number of overseas bases. As an example, the United States could most likely draw down the military footprint in places such as Australia and Canada
