Dan Quayle on Corporations

Vice President of the U.S., 1989-1993; Former Republican Senator (IN)

Small business tied up in knots by Big Brother bureaucracy

[In 1993], when I returned to Indianapolis, I planned to start up my own business. But the eye-opener, even for a staunch conservative like me, is to experience personally the unbelievable headaches and harassment of Big Brother bureaucracy.

To be a small businessperson in America today is to know you’ll be tied up in knots with red tape, bombarded with one ridiculous demand after another. How many hours are wasted? How much creativity is drained dry? How much capital, human and financial, is squandered for the sake of people who have never met a payroll but have the gall to believe everything that you and I earn belongs to the government?

Our earnings certainly don’t belong to the government. And our rights don’t descend from the government. They are the inalienable birthright of every citizen--a gift from a higher authority, a much Higher Authority!
