Janet Mills on Gun Control

It's the government's responsibility to prevent gun violence

I don't believe a private citizen should have to navigate what can be a complex and confusing court procedure by themselves, especially in the middle of already difficult circumstances. It is the government's responsibility, not that of a private citizen, to protect the public from gun violence. Law enforcement officers are taking this law seriously, have been trained, and are using the law on a daily basis to remove firearms from those who should not have them--672 times total as of yesterday.

Close private sale loophole on background checks

I have arrived at the conclusion that I do not know how we can allow people who legally cannot have guns to buy them through a private sale and pose a risk to themselves or the public.

And I do not know how we can hold commercial sellers to a higher standard while allowing an underground market of private sellers to advertise guns for sale without any restrictions. In my conversations with Maine people, I believe they agree. People who can't legally own guns should not have such easy access to them.

Ban bump stocks and high-capacity magazine

Gun Control: Support more restrictive gun control legislation? Restrict semi-automatic weapons?

Mills: Yes. Ban bump stocks and high-capacity magazines. Spent career fighting for sensible gun safety laws, including related to domestic violence.

Moody: No. Supports ME Constitution's statement that right to keep and bear arms "shall never be questioned."

Rated A+ by the NRA, indicating a pro-gun rights voting record.

Mills scores A+ by NRA on pro-gun rights policies - Lifetime Score from NRA Political Victory Fund

While widely recognized today as a major political force and as America`s foremost defender of Second Amendment rights, the National Rifle Association (NRA) has, since its inception, been the premier firearms education organization in the world. But our successes would not be possible without the tireless efforts and countless hours of service our nearly three million members have given to champion Second Amendment rights and support NRA programs.

The following ratings are based on lifetime voting records on gun issues and the results of a questionaire sent to all Congressional candidates; the NRA assigned a letter grade (with A+ being the highest and F being the lowest).
