Aaron Ford on Government Reform

Regulate price fixing of essential goods and services

With the Trump administration indicating little interest in the federal government's consumer protection role, it could be up to states to prohibit and prevent corporate landlords from using algorithm software to inflate rents via price fixing. Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford has brought forward Assembly Bill 44 to regulate price fixing of essential goods and services, including shelter, food and medicine.

Allow automatic voter registration through DMV

IP1: AN ACT establishing procedures by which the DMV must register a person to vote or update a person's voter registration information.

Las Vegas Review-Journal 3/14/17: The Secretary of State does review registrations but, by statute, cannot check for citizenship. Unless immigrants pay more attention at the DMV than most citizens, IP1 would lead to thousands of non-citizens going on the voter rolls. They could then vote without proving citizenship or showing photo ID.

Gov. Sandoval Veto Letter, 3/22/17: "The current DMV voter registration process provides the necessary balance for voluntary and informed voter registration. [Initiative Petition 1] upsets that balance, removing the element of allowing an individual to initiate the voter registration process, and increasing the possibility of improper registration."

Legislative Outcome: Passed Assembly 27-15-0 on Feb/22/17; Aaron Ford voted YES; passed Senate 12-9-0 on Mar/13; Vetoed on Mar/21.

Allow voter registration closer to Election Day

AB440: Revises provisions relating to voter registration. Las Vegas Review-Journal June 8, 2013:Assembly Bill 440 would have allowed people to register to vote as late as 5 p.m. before the Tuesday election. Because early voting occurs the two weeks before election day, the bill also would have allowed people to register and immediately vote at early voting places. Political observers generally believe late registration deadlines help Democrats more than Republicans.

Excerpts from veto message:The registration deadlines currently in place apply only to registration that occurs immediately prior to a particular election day. There is no indication that these deadlines are detrimental to Nevada's voting process or needs to be changed.

Legislative outcome: Passed Assembly 25-16-0 on Apr/23/2013; Passed Senate 11-10-0 on May/23/2013; Aaron Ford voted YES; Vetoed by Governor Brian Sandoval on Jun/7/2013
