Mike Carey on Civil Rights

Gender identity is a protected class; but my faith guides me

Q: Should sexual orientation and gender identity be protected classes in non-discrimination laws?

A: Agree.

Q: Do you agree with Critical Race Theory (CRT) which asserts that the institutions in the United States are fundamentally racist?

A: Strongly Disagree.

Q: Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

A: As a Catholic, I believe in the sanctity of all life and that we are all granted individual freedoms by our creator--life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness--and that those rights do not come from our government, but are rightfully recognized by it; and that it is our duty to be good stewards of the civil society that we have inherited from the great leaders who came before us. My faith guides me to abide by the Golden Rule, which is to do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

No reparations; but condemn racism

Q: Should reparations be given to people on the basis of race?

A: Strongly Disagree.

Q: Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?

A: I condemn racism wholeheartedly and believe we should all work together to educate future generations about its dangers in order to build a more perfect Union for all.

Voted to protect same-sex marriage

The Respect for Marriage Act would repeal provisions that define marriage in federal law as only between one man and one woman, and would require all states to recognize same-sex marriage at the federal level. It passed the House with all Democrats and 47 Republicans voting for it. Four of those Republicans are from Ohio: Representatives Mike Carey, Anthony Gonzalez, Dave Joyce, and Mike Turner.
