John Carney on Immigration

No free pass, but guest worker program

With more than 11 million illegal immigrants living in our nation, it is clear that our immigration system needs a structural adjustment. For generations, we have attracted the best and brightest from around the globe. Our immigration policies should ensure that we continue to serve as a magnet for international talent, allowing entrepreneurs to come to America to create jobs and help grow industries. But economic interests should never trump federal law, and no one should get a free pass for breaking the law. We need a comprehensive national plan that enforces the law, secures the border, creates an effective guest worker program targeted towards industries with labor shortages, and addresses the millions of immigrants already in America, many of whom have children who are U.S. citizens.
