Asa Hutchinson on Government Reform

Former Administrator of D.E.A.; former Republican Representative (AR-3)

Reduce federal non-defense workforce by 10% like I did in AR

Vivek RAMASWAMY: The only war that I will declare as US President will be the war on the federal administrative state that is the source of toxic regulations acting like a wet blanket on the economy.

V.P. Mike PENCE: Let me explain it to you. I was a House conservative leader before it was cool. I actually pushed the Deficit Reduction Act. That was the last time we actually reduced the national debt.

Gov. Asa HUTCHINSON: We have 14 percent fewer state employees in Arkansas after I left the government than when I took over as governor eight years ago. I tell that because that's what we need in Washington, D.C. We need somebody who can actually constrain the growth of federal government, that can actually reduce the size. I pledge to reduce it by 10 percent our federal nondefense workforce. That's a specific pledge to make that attacks the administrative state. And let me applaud some of the business partners that are here that have had success in business.

Supreme Court needs to be transparent on reporting rules

The Court needs to be transparent. They need to be clear on what their reporting rules are. They need to review those to make sure they're very similar to the other public officials and branches of government, which has broad reporting requirements. Clearly, they have not been sufficient. They've changed those. But I think they need this step so the American people understand what the rules are, and what is required, and is similar to other public officials.

I will reduce the federal civilian workforce by 10%!

Too often, our businesses and families are held back by a federal bureaucracy that is out of control, heavy-handed and wasteful. As President, I will reduce the federal civilian workforce by 10%! You can believe me when I say I will do this because I have done it. In Arkansas, I reduced the state executive workforce by 14%. And there is a lot more room for improvement in Washington.

The Electoral College is critical to our nation

While I do believe there can be an effective review always to make sure our systems of elections work well, the Electoral College is what is critical to our nation. I supported that, and his challenge to that was wrong and did not serve our nation well and it was demonstrated on January 6th.

Cut outdated regulations and cut government employees

We have cut the size and inefficiency of government. We have worked to cut the red tape. We repealed over 800 outdated and unnecessary regulations, which makes state government less burdensome to taxpayers and businesses. We have reduced the size of the executive branch of state government by more than 1,400 employees. That is a reduction of over 5 percent. This is through improved management practices and attrition, but we can do more.

1999: Brought articles of impeachment against Bill Clinton

In the 2014 campaign, former Rep. Ross is expected to go head-to-head with Republican Asa Hutchinson, a former congressman from Northwest Arkansas, in a race with some political ghosts. Ross is a protege of former President Bill Clinton; and, Hutchinson is the former congressman who brought the articles of impeachment against Clinton from the U.S. House of Representatives to trial in the U.S. Senate in 1999. Clinton was subsequently acquitted, ostensibly on the basis of an emotional floor speech by then-Senator Dale Bumpers, of Arkansas.
