COVID: reaching unvaccinated will have to become personal

GOV. HOGAN: I think right now in America, there are certainly people on both ends of the extremes, on the left and the right, who get all of the attention. The ones that are making the most noise. But about 70% of the people are somewhere in the middle. They're moderate or right of center, left of center. They really want their elected officials to try to figure out a way to do something about this toxic politics. And they want us to work together to come up with real bipartisan common sense solutions.

GOV. ANDY BESHEAR (D-KY): When it comes to misinformation, I really don't think this is a red or a blue issue. It is a fact versus fiction, or a sometimes sane versus insane issue. We are well past the populations that are going to listen to a government official and take the vaccine. People are going to have to call or go see that person they love and care about that is unvaccinated, and they're going to have to put their relationship on the line.

Maryland Model: total cost of care all-payer model

Governor Larry Hogan signed and officially enacted Maryland's Total Cost of Care All-Payer Model, known as the "Maryland Model," in a signing ceremony at the Maryland State House.

The Maryland Model is an innovative approach to healthcare provider payment that is unique to Maryland and made possible via a contract between the state and the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The new model contract is expected to provide an additional $300 million in savings per year by 2023, totaling $1 billion in savings over five years.

Said Gov. Hogan, "Today, we are taking another major step forward in our efforts to ensure that every Marylander has access to quality healthcare. It is my hope that these actions will be an example to the nation that when both sides of the aisle and all levels of government come together to develop innovative solutions, we can make real progress toward addressing our healthcare challenges and making care more accessible and more affordable."

Beat cancer with chemotherapy while in office

In June 2015, after barely five months in office, Republican Gov. Larry Hogan called a press conference on a hot summer afternoon to share the news that he had just been diagnosed with "a very advanced and very aggressive" form of cancer: non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. It had been discovered in late stage three, when survival rates for that type of cancer are normally in the 50 to 70% range. To lighten the mood in the room, the affable Hogan wisecracked, "The best news is that my odds of getting through this in beating this are much, much better than the odds I had of beating Anthony Brown," as the audience laughed and aides applauded. The quip under scored that Hogan surprise victory in deep blue Maryland over Brown--Lieutenant Governor under two-term Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley--ranked as one of the major upsets nationwide in 2014. Hogan won over many constituents with his show of stoic courage and dealing with six separate rounds of five-day-a-week, 24-hour-a-day chemotherapy.
