Mike Lee on Tax Reform
|
Taxes are necessary but inherently impinge on liberty
Taxes are necessary because they fund the operations of government. But the collection of taxes inherently impinges on taxpayers' property rights and undermines their individual liberty. Many taxpayers are required to spend MONTHS every year working, in
effect, for the government. And when people pay taxes, they typically forfeit property & liberty that, once taken, will not and cannot be returned. Thus, ANY law creating a government program that costs money--as essentially ALL government programs do-
diminishes the liberty and property interests of taxpayers. Any time the taxpayer spends working for money that goes to the government is time the taxpayers can't spend [doing what he wants]. My point here is simple: government spending INEVITABLY
interferes with liberty & property. Consequently, legislators at all levels of government should constantly ask themselves whether each expenditure they authorize can be justified in light of its impact on the liberty and property interests of taxpayers.

Supports the FairTax and the flat tax
With 50% of wage earners paying little or no taxes, too many voters have no "skin in the game"--and no reason to question new government programs that are funded by the real taxpayers. Until we reform the tax code to give all
Americans a stake in their government (through the fair or flat tax), Congress will continue to adopt new entitlements, new bailouts, and new relief programs.
