Elaine Chao on Civil Rights

Secretary of Labor (Pres. Bush Cabinet)

Affirmative Action discounts equal opportunity and merit

Ms. Chao's views on affirmative action are likely to draw close scrutiny from minority and immigrant advocacy groups. As a participant in President Clinton's 1998 ''Dialogue on Race,'' she criticized schools and companies that overlooked merit to meet diversity goals. ''I think we should heed to the overall core value of this country that equal opportunity applies for all, and that should be the same standards for everyone,'' she said.
