Legalize marijuana: let the people decide

The will of the people matters. HJR 4 would change Idaho's Constitution so that citizens could no longer use the initiative process to legalize marijuana. Only the Legislature would have that power if approved.

That means the real question is not simply how you feel about marijuana. It is whether Idaho voters should give up part of the initiative power they have today. Citizen initiatives exist because sometimes the people need to act when politicians will not.

Marijuana may be the issue in HJR 4, but the broader debate is about the initiative process itself. Once voters accept the principle that certain subjects should be removed from their direct control, future lawmakers could propose other restrictions through separate amendments.

Personal freedoms may not be automatically affected by HJR 4--the balance between legislative power and the people's initiative power matters.

Your Constitution. Your rights. Know what your vote changes. Vote NO on HJR 4.

Fully supports legalization, treat like state liquor sales

Pickens said she fully supports legalization and wants it to be treated like state liquor sales. She said that by doing this, it would generate extra revenue for the state, and people would no longer be getting illegal marijuana that is potentially laced with something harmful. "I've seen studies, and I have seen first-hand how medical marijuana literally saved lives," Pickens said. "I've seen it in an epileptic kid from having seizures that would have ended their life."
