Hannah Pingree on Welfare & Poverty

My housing plan calls to invest $100 million by year

Q: Many Maine businesses say they can't find workers because workers can't find housing. The median price of a house in Maine is $425,000. [tp Pingree:] You put out the report in the Mills administration saying we will be 80,000 units short in 2030.

PINGREE: Housing is the fundamental issue holding back the state of Maine. We need to build more housing to ensure that young people can afford to stay here. We need rentals people across our workforce can afford. and we need to make it happen quickly. My housing plan calls to invest $100 million by year in programs that we know work -- affordable homeownership, but also the kinds of infrastructure that it takes for private developers and communities to connect new homes.

BENNETT: Reduce down payments for first-time homebuyers using a state guarantee.

CHARLES: The only way you get the housing stock of is to methodically encourage builders. You got it drop all the regs. You need to incentivize investment.
