Bob Massie on Civil Rights

Civil rights are the basis of a strong & harmonious society

I believe in the fundamental rights and dignity of every person--no matter their gender, race, age, sexual orientation or disability status. Having lived in South Africa and written a history of its struggle for democracy, I know that civil rights are th basis of a strong and harmonious society. This is part of our revolutionary heritage; Americans know in our bones that we cannot build the foundation for a better life without guaranteed freedom and equality for all.

Equal pay & equal respect for women in the workplace

I will stand with women in their continued fight for equal pay, equal respect, and complete access to healthcare. Eliminating discrimination in pay, promotion and work-life balance is about enabling the dreams of women workers, but it is also a critical part of rescuing and restoring the middle class. Congress needs to spotlight and tackle the problem of workplace fairness and ensure that women have proper recourse for discrimination claims, rather than blocking laws like the Paycheck Fairness Act.

Repeal DOMA; overhaul federal laws for LGBT equality

LGBT Americans deserve full equality and freedom from fear as basic civil rights. They still face discrimination in every sphere of life. This unfairness is even more unjust and painful because our Federal government supports much of it.

We must overhaul our federal laws to end discrimination in every sphere. That means finally repealing the Defense of Marriage Act, and making sure that America's immigration policies and bureaucratic rules work for LGBT families, not against them.
