Elizabeth Colbert-Busch on Immigration

Since 1800s, America is a land of promise and freedom

For people around the world, America is a land of promise and freedom. It was no different for my family generations ago. The Great Famine hit Ireland in the 1840s and my ancestors gathered all their possessions and made the daunting journey to America and what they hoped was a better future. It is a uniquely American experience. And while my family cherishes our Irish heritage, we are grateful and proud to be part of the great American story.

Comprehensive immigration reform with path to citizenship

I support comprehensive immigration reform. For too long, sensible proposals have been tied in a political knot in Washington. Fortunately, a bipartisan solution is now starting to take shape in Congress. I support that effort because the system is broken and fixing it is important to our security, economy and millions of families.

There are more than 11 million undocumented immigrants living in America, and roughly 55,000 of them live here in South Carolina. The majority of them are serving in our workforce, contributing to our economies and paying taxes. Deportation of 11 million people is neither economically or practically feasible. Instead, we need a path forward.

I support providing law enforcement the best technology available to secure our borders. We should have a tough but fair path to citizenship for deserving immigrants. We need to hold undocumented immigrants accountable by passing criminal background checks and requiring payment of taxes.
