Kathy Hochul on Families & Children

Put our state on a pathway to universal childcare

There is another driver of costs for families we need to confront: child care. I want to partner with the legislature and put our state on a pathway to universal childcare. This really matters.

We're going to dedicate 110 million dollars to build new child care centers, renovate existing ones, and expand options for families and communities all over New York. And we will establish a corps of substitute child care professionals so someone's always on call.

Make New York the first state to offer prenatal leave

Last year, infant deaths were up for the first time in 20 years. And black and brown women remain three to four times more likely to die in childbirth. I won't let this continue on my watch. We must ensure moms have healthy pregnancies. So I want to make New York the first state in the nation to offer prenatal leave.

Streamline and centralize the child care application process

Less than 10% of families who are eligible for child care assistance are actually enrolled. This is the legacy of a system that is difficult to navigate - by design. That has to change. Our plan will streamline and centralize the child care application process, expand access for the most vulnerable families, increase income eligibility, and lower co-pays, while also supporting the child care providers who are indispensable for working parents.

Fought for Paid Family Leave & $15 minimum wage

As Lieutenant Governor, she continues to fight for working families. Kathy was a strong voice in the successful fight for a $15 minimum wage and Paid Family Leave. Every day, Kathy is working with the Governor and state legislature to prioritize making lives better for all New York families--because no one working full-time should live in poverty.
