Dwight Grotberg on Tax Reform

Signed Taxpayer Protection Pledge: oppose all tax increases

Dwight Grotberg recently signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge sponsored by Americans for Tax Reform. The Pledge commits signers to "oppose any and all efforts to increase the marginal income tax rates for individuals and/or businesses. and oppose any net reduction or elimination of deductions and credits, unless matched dollar for dollar by further reducing tax rates." ATR has offered the Pledge to all candidates for federal office since 1987. To date, 267 members of Congress have signed the Pledge.

Make the current tax cuts permanent

Q: What is your stance on tax reform?

A: If it truly helps North Dakota. I have been in countries that have a flat tax and the rates are really high. I like the idea of increasing capital loss deductions, and making current tax cuts permanent.

Abolish the estate tax

He supports tax cuts, particularly the abolition of the federal estate tax and the continuation of a tax break that allows for more rapid depreciation of farm equipment. Federal law calls for the estate tax to be phased out, but it could be reinstituted in five years if the law is not changed to make it permanent. Conrad has not favored permanent repeal of the estate tax.

Allow more rapidly depreciating farm equipment

Grotberg supports the continuation of a tax break that allows for more rapid depreciation of farm equipment. Grotberg said the depreciation measure has helped farmers upgrade their equipment, and provided a boost to rural machinery dealers, Grotberg said. More rapid equipment depreciation helps farmers reduce their tax bills. "As a producer and as a business owner, it's a tremendous tool to be able to expand and update machinery and equipment when you need to," he said.
