Wesley Clark on Social Security

NATO General; Democratic Candidate for President

Protect Social Security system to ensure senior income

I’m a believer in Social Security. I think you need to protect that system, I think you need to put the resources into it, I think you need to assure that it’s solvent. And I’ll tell you why. For both reasons, we need to sustain Social Security.

Stock market is for individuals, not for Social Security

Q: Do you find an appropriate role for stock market investments in the Social Security retirement program? Would you allow an individual’s being able to invest?

CLARK: I think it’s great if individuals invest in the stock market, but not as a substitute for ensuring the solvency of Social Security. We’re going to get Social Security right first. And then, we’re going to put in place the measures so that individuals can save and invest on top of Social Security.

Strengthen retirement security

[My framework of 30-year challenges includes] strengthening retirement security, simply because it is right; first for our society to assure that all its members who have contributed throughout their lifetimes are assured a minimal standard of living, and secondly to free the American worker and family to concentrate on the challenges of today. All Americans are better off when we ensure that each American will have access to some basic level of financial security in his or her retirement.
