INCREASE LOCAL CONTROL: Doug will get big government out of the way so that local communities -- not politicians or bureaucrats -- can lead.

Doug Burgum:
Exempted military retirement benefits from state income tax
In North Dakota, we've got 50,000 veterans who call North Dakota home, and that goes all the way back to some surviving greatest generation, World War II folks, for my dad's generation. Kudos to all of you, because with their leadership,
we exempted military retirement benefits from state income tax. And we cut through red tape so the trailing military spouses with occupational licenses from other states can work here.

Doug Burgum:
Private investment in infrastructure reduces property taxes
Communities have a choice about how and where they spend their dollars. And as we look at growing populations it's imperative that we fully utilize the existing infrastructure we've already built to support
that growth rather than extending new infrastructure that raises everyone's property taxes. We have an opportunity through our design choices to drive taxes down, because taxes are driven by the footprint of the city.

Dustin Peyer:
Revenue should come from wealthy; and sales tax
I believe a fair system of taxes along with state owned business can give the people a fair amount of public services. Trickle down does not work. We need to be eliminating taxes for business that pay a living wage.
For the middle class. And for ownership of property and others. I believe the majority of tax collections should come from sales tax and from collections from the wealthiest folks who make money off the middle class workforce.

Trump tax cuts provide no relief for middle-class families

John Hoeven:
Pushed property tax relief and economic development
As governor, Hoeven often pushed a Democratic agenda that was better supported by Senate Democrats like me, than by House Republican leaders:- 70% of education costs paid by the state (Democrats' policy since 1980)
- property tax relief
(Democrats' campaign platform in 2006 and 2008)
- economic development (Gov. Sinner's Growing North Dakota)
I'll stand up to the leaders in my party. John will join the party of no. I will be an Independent Voice for North Dakota.

Michael Coachman:
Taxes for government, not forced redistribution of wealth
Individuals, families and the government should be responsible in their spending. Taxpayers expect the government to be efficient and avoid waste with their money. The State should only collect taxes to fund legitimate government functions.
Government taxes and fees should be limited to essential, inherently governmental functions and not for the forced redistribution of wealth, or disproportionate advantages for targeted interest groups.

Rick Becker:
Wants a flat tax with a very, very low rate
Becker said instead of having a certain tax plan for different levels of income, a low and flat income tax for everyone would be better. "If I make 10 times more money, I should pay 10 times more money," Becker said, adding, "The key is to make it low.
I want a very, very low rate, and, in fact, I prefer a zero rate, when we've got oil money. That's what we should be aiming for." He also added property tax reforms should take place.

Thomas Campbell:
overhaul the tax code to grow jobs
Tom believes the nation's $19 trillion debt is not just a fiscal problem--it's a moral problem too. It's wrong to bury our children and grandchildren under a mountain of debt. He will fight to eliminate wasteful spending,
balance the budget and pay down the debt. On taxes, Tom supports overhauling the tax code to grow jobs. Instead of letting the lobbyists and special interests write the tax laws, he'll put hard-working North Dakota families first.

Doug Burgum:
Special legislative session for $46M tax cut
Gov. Doug Burgum today expressed disappointment after state Senate members rejected an income tax relief bill that would have saved taxpayers $46 million and effectively eliminated the state income tax for an additional 50,000 wage earners. Burgum
called lawmakers to Bismarck for this week's special session to address the 2023-2025 appropriations bill, as well as to make strategic investments in tax relief and infrastructure. Despite the House overwhelmingly approving the income tax relief in
House Bill 1549 on a 71-19 vote, the Senate voted 16-31 to defeat the bill today. "This is a missed opportunity. Senators could have followed the House's lead and deliver much-needed tax relief to North Dakotans struggling with high inflation. Instead,
they squandered that opportunity." Burgum said.
"This tax relief was a no-brainer: The citizens have the need, and we definitely have the resources. Current information shows our state's financial position is stronger than ever," Burgum said.

Doug Burgum:
To be competitive we've got to get to zero income tax
So to be competitive, one of the simplest things we could do, we've got the money to do it, is to get to zero income tax. And why does that matter?
Well, you know, part of it matters because we're competing against states that have zero income tax.

Katrina Christiansen:
It is past time that the rich pay their fair share
For far too long, the rich and powerful in this country have taken advantage of the U.S. tax code at the expense of the working class. Over the past 40 years, the rich have received four significant tax cuts.
It is past time that the rich pay their fair share so we can invest in the working class and help pay down the $30 trillion debt.
