Jeff Jackson: Opposed weakening environmental/health regulation

Legislative Title: SB553: Regulatory Reform Act:

Analysis by N.C. LCV: SB 553 earned modest bipartisan support after some of the most environmentally objectionable provisions regarding landfills and electronic waste recycling were removed.

Veto Message: Provisions in the legislation allowing trash receptacles in exit corridors could pose a fire safety risk for residents and emergency responders. Also, this legislation could allow septic system permits to be issued that circumvent state septic system rules which can hurt public health and threaten clean water. Both of these provisions threaten public health and safety.

Legislative Outcome: Passed House 78-31-11, Roll Call #804 on Aug/29/19; Vetoed by Governor Roy Cooper on Sep/20/19; Veto Sustained in Senate 28-21-1, Roll Call #663 on Jan/14/20; State Sen. Jeff Jackson voted NO.

Cal Cunningham: Supported state Clean Smokestacks Act

Q: Tighten or loosen environmental regulations?

Cal Cunningham: Tighten. As a state senator, supported a Clean Smokestacks Act, requiring coal-fired power plants to reduce carbon emissions.

Thom Tillis: Loosen. Supports Trump EPA head Andrew Wheeler's attempts to loosen regulations as needless red tape. Environmental groups have criticized Wheeler's actions.

Dan Forest: Protect environment, no to "apocalyptic alarmism"

I strongly believe in good stewardship of the environment - protecting clean air, clean water and conserving land for future generations. The problem is that the term "climate change" has become a catch-all for both environmental stewardship and apocalyptic alarmism. If we want to address these issues, then we must stop tossing everything into one basket and begin tackling one solvable problem at a time. It's time to stop using the environment as a political football and start solving problems.

Noam Chomsky: Unfair for emerging economies to bear environmental burden

With the environmental crisis, if nothing significant is done about it, and pretty quickly, then maybe some humans will survive, but it will be scattered and nothing like a decent existence, and we'll take a lot of the rest of the living world along with us.

Is anything going to be done about it? The prospects are not very auspicious. There was an international conference on this last December. A total disaster. Nothing came out of it. The emerging economies, China, India, and others, argued that it's unfair for them to bear the burden of a couple hundred years of environmental destruction by the currently rich and developed societies. That's a credible argument. But it's one of these cases where you can win the battle and lose the war. The argument isn't going to be very helpful to them if, in fact, the environmental crisis advances and a viable society goes with it. And, of course, the poor countries, for whom they're speaking, will be the worst hit. In fact, they already are the worst hit.

Pat McCrory: Remove regulations on Environmental and Natural Resources

Almost every day since I have been your governor, I have been personally meeting with potential employers who want to expand or relocate to North Carolina. We are already successful in improving our customer service working through bureaucratic regulatory roadblocks that stifle economic recruitment efforts. This is especially true in the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources. We're bring a customer service attitude to DENR.

Pat McCrory: Oversaw decline of Department of Environmental Quality

McCrory was commonly criticized for his closeness with Duke Energy, as the company came under fire for several coal ash leaks during his administration. Although McCrory occasionally signed legislation holding Duke Energy accountable for the spills, he also oversaw a decline in the strength of the Department of Environmental Quality, which is in charge of regulating polluters.

Michael Morgan: Protect our public land: no RDU Quarry expansion

Mike Morgan announced his disapproval of the expansion of the RDU Quarry located in Wake County near the Umstead State Park. A corporate mining company has been embroiled in a lengthy legal battle to obtain state permits that would allow the expansion of an open pit crushed rock quarry to be expanded, near the East Coast Greenway.

"This situation is about saving our public lands. It's about making sure that public land remains protected and free from commercial noise pollution that intrudes on the sights and sounds of our nature preserves," said Morgan. "I am concerned because if this quarry is allowed to proceed, it will be the first private rock quarry on public land in the state," added Morgan. "The law clearly states that no permit shall be issued which will have significant adverse impact on a state park. And this one does," said Morgan.

"I seriously question Attorney General Josh Stein's encouragement and approval of this action," said Mr. Morgan.

Mark Robinson: No environmental ESG ratings in public spending

Q: Should environmental and social issues, like ESG (environmental, social, and governance) ratings, be used as criteria in deciding where to invest public monies?
A: No. The priority should be responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars that evaluates risk and return on financial terms--not based on extreme political agendas.

Dale Folwell: ESG raises the cost of doing business in NC

Q: Should ESG (environmental, social, and governance) ratings be used in deciding where to invest public monies?

A: No. As State Treasurer, I'm the only person in the US who officially asked for Larry Fink of Blackrock to be fired because of his attempts to politicize the NC Pension System. As Chair of the State Banking Commission, I found ESG is/was raising the cost of doing business in NC. ESG needs to stand for NC Energy independence, Safe neighborhoods and Good government.

Michael Whatley: Obama climate plan an overstep of Congressional authority

In a 2013 blog post for Consumer Energy Alliance, he responded to then-President Barack Obama's 21-page "Climate Change Action Plan," which Whatley described as an overstep of congressional authority and a "mixed bag of incentive programs, new regulations and lofty goals."

"Every homeowner, business, manufacturer and electricity consumer will undoubtedly feel the painful effects of higher energy costs under the President's proposed plan."

Roy Cooper: Touts benefits of EPA grant's environmental impact

The state will receive $117.8 million from the EPA's $421 million Climate Pollution Reduction Grant. Cooper said some of the funds would go toward conserving Brunswick County's 15,900-acre Green Swamp Preserve. "Think of what this swamp can do for our environment and for our resilience," he said. "This swamp and others like it soak up potential flood waters, reduce carbon release into the air, and create a great space for recreation and for families to go."
