John Cox on Tax Reform

Republican Party Chair, Cook County (IL)

Eliminate the IRS; support the Fair Tax

I want to eliminate the IRS. Our tax system is counterproductive, too complicated and time consuming. Taxing income is inherently wrong, and stunts economic growth. That is why I support the Fair Tax, which has been introduced in the Congress as HR25 and S25.

Eliminate the Death Tax; veto all tax increases

As president, I will seek to eliminate the “death tax,” and will veto all tax increase proposals.

Scrap the Tax Code and get rid of the income tax

I absolutely believe we need to scrap the Tax Code and get rid of the income tax. It is too complex, intrusive and wasteful. I favor the FAIR tax, the national consumption tax, which would be simpler, fairer, and less intrusive to Americans. We would reach the illegal economy, we would end the punishment of US manufacturers and we would encourage people to save and invest.

National sales tax doesn’t hit the poor

Q. What are your plans for the Fair Tax? Do people understand that concept?

A. I don’t think it’s been presented in the right way. A national sales tax doesn’t hit the poor, because there are ample rebates for the poor. It doesn’t increase the price. This is a 23% retail sales tax. You want to encourage economic growth and you want to encourage investment. It’s all about the economy. The tax code should not be used as a reward or a punishment. It should be used having the least impact on the economy.
