Asa Hutchinson on Families & Children

Former Administrator of D.E.A.; former Republican Representative (AR-3)

Enhance adoption services and maternal care

Arkansas has the record of being the most pro-life state in the nation. I've signed 30 pro-life pieces of legislation while I was governor. And every state can determine a different outcome here. Let's talk about it in terms of compassion, in terms of protecting the life and also understanding how we have to enhance adoption services. How we have to enhance maternal care. Those things we've done in Arkansas and are important for our nation's future.

Don't want government interfering with parental decisions

And so, we don't want the government telling parents when they can have vaccines for their children and not have vaccines or have to have vaccines for children. We fight for the role of parents. And so, a conservative position, you always are debating and think about, is this the right role of government to interfere with parental decisions? I came down on a limited fashion and said parents have an important role to play here.

Reformed child welfare system with faith-based partners

We have reformed our child welfare system. Three years ago, you approved $24 million additional funding for our child welfare programs, and the result is a 30 percent increase in foster beds; the result is 22 percent increase in caseworkers; and the result is nearly 1,000 fewer children in foster care. We initiated the Restore Hope Summit where our faith-based leaders and government partners figured out ways to work together.

More funding for foster children

Let's not leave anyone behind, and that is why I am asking your support for a higher level of funding, also, for our foster children in Arkansas. We need to improve the system. We need to adequately provide for our foster children that are in our care. We need to address their needs, and hopefully, provide a way out and restore family relationships. But we need to provide the additional funding that is being requested in the budget.

Reform divorce laws to increase waiting period

Question topic: Where minor children are involved, divorce laws should be reformed to include mutual consent of both parents and an increased waiting period, unless there is fault or abuse.
