Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Homeland Security

Do every single thing to protect and preserve our freedoms

[On veterans rights]: "There is no greater representation of the greatness of our nation than its veterans."

"Good people do everything they can to protect the values of our communities, state and country," she said. "One reason I'm here is to say thank you. This is a special place for special people." She paused before adding how critical she believes it to be that we do "every single thing we can to protect and preserve our freedoms and pass them along to the next generation."

Selfless sacrifice of soldiers represents best of America

Hundreds of troops had gathered [for a surprise Christmas 2018 visit from] their commander and chief. The room erupted. The men and women of our armed forces were spending Christmas away from their families and instead spending it with their First Family. The President and First Lady went to each table individually thanking the troops and wished them a Merry Christmas.

A member of the US Army silently reached up, tore the Brave Rifles patch representing the Third Armored Cavalry Regiment from this arm, and handed it to me. "We're in this together. It's an honor to meet you."

Overwhelmed with emotion and speechless, I hugged him. I probably held on longer than I should have, and walked away with tears in my eyes more grateful than ever for the brave men and women of our armed forces. Their selfless sacrifice represents the best of America. I keep the patch on my desk in my office to remind me of their sacrifice.
