Medicare-for-All saves $2 trillion over 10 years

Answer from Kevin de Le¢n: I believe healthcare is a human right, not an exclusive privilege of the wealthy. But premiums are skyrocketing by double digits with each passing year, leaving too many Americans agonizing over how to pay for coverage while still meeting their basic needs. Adopting the Medicare-for-All plan could save Americans up to $2 trillion over the next decade.

The reality is, a Medicare-for-All system is the only way to get healthcare costs under control. Switching to this system will save billions in administrative cost, give us the power to finally hold the drug companies accountable, and squeeze other savings out of the system. Americans are already paying for the cost of a single-payer system, but see none of the benefits in return. In California I led the fight for Medicare-for-All, and in Washington I will do the same.

The Legislature finds:
• The United States is the only industrialized country in the world without a universal health insurance system.
• 46 million Americans did not have health insurance.
• The Affordable Care Act is the culmination of decades of movement toward health reform
• As a result of the Affordable Care Act, , by 2019, between 1.2 and 1.6 million individuals will be newly enrolled in Medi-Cal.
• It is the intent of the Legislature to ensure full implementation of the Affordable Care Act, including the Medi-Cal expansion for individuals with incomes below 133% of the federal poverty level.
• This bill would implement the Affordable Care Act by modifying provisions relating to determining eligibility for Medi-Cal.
