Jack Ryan on Crime

Crime's cause is breakdown of family, not gun ownership

Gun control in the United States has been a failed policy. Blaming gun ownership for the problems plaguing some of Illinois' cities is ignoring reality. Instead of taking guns away from law abiding citizens, we need to address the root causes of criminal behavior, including the breakdown of the family and hopelessness caused by lack of access to quality education and a lack of opportunity for segments of our society.

Mandatory minimum sentences for criminals who use guns

We need to toughen penalties on criminals who commit crimes with guns by embracing effective programs such as Project Exile and strong mandatory minimum sentences for criminals who use guns to commit crimes. Additionally, I will encourage state and federal prosecutors throughout Illinois to work together, sharing information and resources to prevent criminals from getting guns and to promote stiffer penalties for individuals who commit crimes with guns.
