On Abortion: Doctors must tell women drug-induced abortion is reversible

Analysis by The Guardian (6/4/15): Planned Parenthood, the American Civil Liberties Union [& others] are challenging SB1318, which requires doctors to tell women having a drug-induced abortion that the procedure is reversible, advice regarded by most medical experts as wrong and misleading. The lawsuit argues that compelling doctors to provide this information against their best medical judgement, with "extreme consequences" for non-compliance, is a violation of their first amendment rights.

On Civil Rights: Allow business to cite religion to not serve gays

Analysis by CNN (2/21/14): Arizona's Legislature has passed a controversial bill that would allow business owners, as long as they assert their religious beliefs, to deny service to gay and lesbian customers. [Opponents] said it would sanction discrimination and open the state to the risk of damaging litigation.

Veto message: I understand that long-held norms about marriage and family are being challenged as never before; society is undergoing many dramatic changes. However, I sincerely believe that SB 1062 has the potential to create more problems than it purports to solve. Religious liberty is a core American and Arizona value; so is non-discrimination.

On Foreign Policy: Israel has God-given right of self-defense on all its lands

• Whereas, Israel has been granted her land under the oldest recorded deed, as recorded in the Old Testament;
• Whereas, the claim and presence of the Jewish people in Israel has remained constant throughout the past 4,000 years; and
• Whereas, this resolution affirmed the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people in the historical region of the Land of Israel, including Judea & Samaria;
• Therefore, Be it resolved:
• That the Members of the Arizona Legislature commend Israel for its cordial and mutually beneficial relationship with the U.S. and support Israel as a Jewish state in its legal, historical, moral and God-given right of self-governance and self-defense on the entirety of its own lands, recognizing that Israel is not an occupier of the lands of others and that peace can be afforded in the region only through a whole and united Israel.

On Government Reform: Curb citizen initiatives to reduce fraud

: Analysis by The Arizona Republic (Apr. 16, 2017): Four years ago, Arizona lawmakers passed an ambitious plan to curb citizen initiatives and make other substantial changes to elections. They said new rules were needed to reduce voter fraud and streamline elections. That didn't sell with a coalition of citizen groups. They called the bill voter suppression, and set out to block it. They got the bill referred to the 2014 ballot; coalition members were confident voters would kill it. So were lawmakers; they repealed the measure [but re-passed it in parts].
