State of North Dakota Archives: on Education

John Hoeven: Accountability in education coupled with local flexibility

The federal government should empower schools, administrators, and teachers to create local strategies that best prepare students to succeed in a global, high-tech economy; not mandate, one-size-fits all regulations. I have supported policies to ensure accountability in education is coupled with adequate local flexibility. I sponsored the Innovate America Act, which would increase the number of STEM schools and place increased emphasis on developing STEM education.

Heidi Heitkamp: No on Measure 2: Don't centralizes control over education

Q: What is your stance on Measure 2?

Berg: "I haven't weighed in on initiated measures because I think it clouds the decision making for those voting on them."

Heitkamp: "I completely understand the frustrations that many North Dakotans have about our property tax system. With that said, I oppose Measure 2 because it centralizes control over education and local government services in Bismarck rather than where our citizens live."

Jack Dalrymple: K-12, equal and adequate funding for all districts

Senate Bill 2150 allocates $997 million in state funding for K-12 schools, an increase of $102.5 million over the current biennium.

The equitable & adequate funding of K-12 education statewide is a valuable investment in our youth & our future. Since 2006, many have worked hard to bring about the greatest reform of K-12 funding in our history. This legislation builds on that success and ensures that all students have access to the resources and opportunities they need to achieve their full potential.

Jack Dalrymple: Higher education is key to North Dakota's future

It is important for us to continue to invest in the system, ensuring the competitiveness of our colleges and universities and creating enhanced opportunities for our young people to excel as tomorrow's leaders.

Legislation will minimize tuition increases and address funding inequities, enhance healthcare education programs and support non-beneficiary students attending ND tribal colleges. Senate Bill 2013 includes increased funding for scholarships for ND students.
