State of Arkansas Archives: on Technology

Asa Hutchinson: Focus on technology education & Innovation Council

We have increased our numbers in computer science courses. Last year, we were at about 6,000, and this year we have more than 8,000 students taking computer coding. One of my goals is to be a hub of technology companies. I am calling for the creation of a private sector Technology and Innovation Council to bring industry leaders and entrepreneurs together to create new energy and support for tomorrow's leaders in software design, cyber security, data analytics, blockchain technology.

Asa Hutchinson: $30 million to expand high-speed internet into rural areas

I'm also asking for support to expand high-speed internet into more rural areas of our state. We have to reduce the digital divide. We have to provide education fairly in all areas of our state. And it takes high-speed internet to do this and so much more from improving the quality of life to attracting businesses and entrepreneurs. I've set aside $30 million for this purpose in our proposed budget. If we can, let's do more, it is such a great need for our state.

Dan Whitfield: Internet info should be personal property, not providers'

Currently, we need to eliminate the grey area on what belongs to us and what does not. Our political representatives in the US Senate gave our Internet Service Providers, after taking huge sums of money from them, the rights to our private internet usage data. Our ISP monitors, records, then sells our internet history to third party advertisers. We need to put an immediate stop to this. We must make it clear that what we do online is OUR personal property and not someone to sell to others.

Mike Huckabee: Arkansas becoming a leader in e-government

I got a phone call from former Gov. Pete Wilson of California. Pete Wilson is now in a global telecommunications and technology business. He said one of the things he does is evaluate states that are moving toward e-government. He said, "Mike, we have looked at all 50 states, and Arkansas is leading the nation in moving toward e-government. No state has quite moved forward as your state has in becoming a leader in bringing its state services on-line and using technology effectively for its taxpayers."

Tom Cotton: Protect officials, government employees from "doxing"

Sen. Tom Cotton introduced legislation to make it a crime to dox [publicize a person's home contact info] a government official or their family members. "No public servant should be endangered or subject to harassment for doing their job," Cotton, co-author of the Public Servant Protection Act, said. The bill gives government employees, elected officials, and appointees the right to have their home addresses and phone numbers--or of their immediate family members--removed from any public website.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders: We will ban cell phones in our schools, bell to bell

This session, we will ban cell phones in our schools, bell to bell, so that our kids are not distracted, in class or out of it. And we will break the cycle of the mental health crisis facing our kids. We will update the Social Media Safety Act so that it's no longer held up in court and can begin to be enforced. And we will give moms the right to sue Big Tech companies under state law, so that they can hold bad actors accountable.

Tom Cotton: Farm and Food Cybersecurity Act would protect food supply

All of us in Arkansas know that agriculture is on the cutting edge of technology, like so many other industries today. Malicious cyber threats can happen at every point of our food supply chain, whether it's on the farm itself at grain co-ops, at food processors, and we have to take these threats seriously. The Farm and Food Cybersecurity Act would ensure that our food supply is brought under the umbrella of critical infrastructure and the way our government addresses cyber threats.
